CNN: “The forgotten minority in police shootings”

Here.

An excerpt:

Native Americans are killed in police encounters at a higher rate than any other racial or ethnic group, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yet rarely do these deaths gain the national spotlight. “Native American people are basically invisible to most of the people in the country,” said Daniel Sheehan, general counsel for the Lakota People’s Law Project.

*** AH, I’m not happy

Behind the Facebook profile you’ve built for yourself is another one, a shadow profile, built from the inboxes and smartphones of other Facebook users. Contact information you’ve never given the network gets associated with your account, making it easier for Facebook to more completely map your social connections.… Facebook isn’t scanning the work email of the attorney above. But it likely has her work email address on file, even if she never gave it to Facebook herself. If anyone who has the lawyer’s address in their contacts has chosen to share it with Facebook, the company can link her to anyone else who has it, such as the defense counsel in one of her cases.  (I guess this also explains how LinkedIn got all my contact info – and how later I received a check in a class action lawsuit. And somehow Microsoft outlook grabbed friends and strangers from Facebook and put them in my contacts. Damn those data mining thieves. L/T)

  1. I read Frank’s story, and watched Emma Thompson interviewed here in the UK too.

The timeline shown in the link about Standing Rock makes for worrying reading. This story gets little coverage in Europe, and the information about the use of private security companies and their clandestine undercover operations should be of concern to everyone in North America. Who’s next? That’s what I would be asking.

I have nothing at all to do with Facebook. It is ‘1984’, with a smiley face emoji.

The Trumps have always been ‘slum landlords’, and yet they are voted into the office of President. Making your fortune from the poverty of others is ‘The American Way’, it seems.

Thanks for another interesting roundup, Lara, and the links too.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I can see the truth of the neglect of Native Americans from the very fact right before my nose that there are hardly any views on your posts! Could you perhaps do more to self-promote your blog? I’m behind you, though I’m a minority with little clout myself. I have schizophrenia. I had a psychiatrist who intimated hospitalization. Terrible, atrocious. Also, I think that the more personal you can make your posts, the more powerful and gut-wrenching they will be. Just an idea.

    1. I hear you Rob. I truly do. As for self-promotion, I am the worst. No ego in me to do that. But I will write more personal stories and have one planned for next week. I am so glad you are here and reading. Take care of you.

  3. Thank you for commenting. Some bloggers I know of aren’t as nice. Ivory tower intellectuals with their cronies. Not really worth my bother, yet I still want to jump in and raise hell. I’m not afraid to fail. I’m usually not uncouth or uncivil… I look forward to your own stories. Take care.

  4. It’s really clear Facebook built my profile because they got it totally wrong. They have me being born in New Zealand and attending a local high school. Presumably I’m meant to correct these errors – but I refuse to do so. I have a right not to make personal details of my background freely available to millions of people via the Internet.

  5. Hmm… Gut check: No, on Facebook/Big Brother (whenever possible), No on DAPL (thanks for returning the dinos to the soil recently in the Dakota pipeline leak you THINK did not contaminate ground water), NO on shooting Native Americans as part of the Thought-he/she had a gun law enforcement protocol (and wasn’t it a KNIFE most recently?), and not only NO but NEVER AGAIN for anything Trump. And before you conclude that I am a bit negative herein, be assured I am positive about how I feel!
