Gottfried Lindauer’s portraits present a collective history of colonial New Zealand, capturing individual identities in a time of great social change and upheaval.

At first, I thought I was looking at ‘colourised’ photos, and was amazed to see that they were paintings. Then I read in the main article that they were often taken from photos, or painted over photos, which might explain the fascinating detail. Important cultural memories indeed.
Best wishes, Pete.

Unfortunately colonialism is still very much alive and well in New Zealand. As Faulkner once wrote, “The past isn’t history. It isn’t even past.”

It’s been my need and hope to share history, Jay. This was very interesting to connect a New Englander to New Zealand.

Thanks for drawing attention to the universal problem of indigenous cultures. Here are some other pictures you may be interested in:
And the artist CF Goldie was probably better at catching the Maori soul than Lindauer:

Such a fascinating people…. Isn’t it interesting that modern sports teams have started ripping off their look and battle traditions for use on the field to intimidate opponents… I mean if they think Native Americans should feel grateful for the “nod” and are shocked when they aren’t, I wonder what these other indigenous peoples might think about such “compliments” and perhaps what THEIR legal take on these caricatures might be? Hmmm…. Am thinking response could be equally fierce….

It’s ironic – the colonists forbid culture and tradition then turn around and use it for themselves (palm to forehead) geesh
