  2. Sadly, this is why animals distrust humans. We are a hideously unpredictable lot. And ironically, this is the world those who revel in self pity and the loss of personal power appear to be craving. But the lesson history teaches us is that once the beast is loosed, we are more likely to be the ones assaulted, not the ones with the biggest guns and the fastest draw; it is almost always the innocent who get hurt. As supposedly enlightened people, we need to be careful what we wish for…There is a reason “civilization” has always been the place where guns were checked with the sheriff, and bad folks were asked to leave town. As for the rest of us, the Marines have a saying…”Stay alert, stay alive.”
