for joan who left us November 5, 2009

My Church
My church is made of snow
My church is made of pine trees and lilac bushes
My church is filled with singing birds and little creeks
My church is a flock of geese and a soaring hawk
My church is right outside my door

I sing for all that is…
I do not need a building to pray for my relations
I do not need anyone to tell me how to remember
I do not need a book of words for my gratitude or loss
I do not need a monsignor to bless me or forgive me

I do not need to be reminded of Great Mystery who many call GOD

My church is open, vast and wide,
just as my heart is open, vast and wide
I will remember my friend Joan whose spirit has left us,
who once looked for a building to pray and people to pray with…
then she found her church in her paintings of ducks and wildflowers

I only have to look at her canvas
I only have to look at the snow, trees, birds
and oceans to remember her
I only have to see a sunflower to remember all that is her essence…
